Jul 3rd 2011!⃝I think everybody is entitled to their own interpretation of the song, and I'm not saying that the other interpretations are wrong, but I personally believe this song is about the environment, and how we have wronged nature. Along the lines of "Ready to Fall" really, just about the environment.
"In fields where nothing grew but weeds,
I found a flower at my feet,
Bending there in my direction,
I wrapped a hand around its stem,
I pulled until the roots gave in,
Finding there what I’ve been missing,
But I know…
So I tell myself, I tell myself it’s wrong."
Man found something unique, something he could rely upon for his survival, nature's bounty, and he used it - Infact he exploited it to a large extent ("Pulled until the roots gave in"). He knows he has wronged nature, and he will have to pay for his greed, and hence "So I tell myself, I tell myself it's wrong"
"There’s a point we pass from which we can’t return.
I felt the cold rain of the coming storm.
All because of you,
I haven’t slept in so long.
When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean,
Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,
I’ll follow your voice,
All you have to do is shout it out."
Man realizes that he WILL someday have to pay for his greed, and he knows the time isn't too far away ("There’s a point we pass from which we can’t return. I felt the cold rain of the coming storm.")
The CHORUS: This, I believe, is man's guilt. He has not been able to "sleep", that is, be at peace for a long time due to his scarred conscience. And whenever he is able to "sleep" (metaphorically of course) he is even then laden with guilt of his own wrongdoings. Not only guilt, this can be referring to the actual realization of man, after he had to pay for his damage to the environment. He longs for happiness again, where he can be at peace (the "shore").
He knows he has made a mistake and is ready to correct his ways, and begs for forgiveness, some sort of a Nature's Call.
And hence, the shout it out part.
"Inside my hands these petals browned,
Dried up, fallen to the ground
But it was already too late now.
I pushed my fingers through the earth,
Returned this flower to the dirt,
So it could live.
I walked away now.
But I know…
Not a day goes by that I don’t feel it’s burn."
Now after man has wronged nature, he searches for redemption, but it was too late. He tends to nature again, tries to save it, but the damage had been done. However he still feels the guilt for what he has done, and pays for it day after day.
"All because of you,
I haven’t slept...
...Inside these arms of yours."
Man begs for forgiveness, and for a second chance, and wants to be in the safe and secure arms of mother nature again.
"All because of you,
I believe in angels.
Not the kind with wings,
No, not the kind with halos,
The kind that bring you home,
When home becomes a strange place.
I’ll follow your voice,
All you have to do is shout it out."
After wronging nature, the way mankind did, he says he believes in "angels", not the literal angels with wings and halos, but angels that "bring you home, when home becomes a strange place"
This, actually, is referring to man's metaphorical HOPE.
Hope for redemption, hope to go back to the good old days, if only he had realized earlier. Angels that will bring him "home", home being the time in history when man lived with nature in complete harmony, bereft of exploitation. But that home is now a strange place, as man himself has brought this upon himself and due to over exploitation has ruined his Haven, his Home, and it is now, a strange place to him. He again begs for forgiveness, and has hope for a better future.
And thats what I think the song is about, first time I heard it, thats the view I got, and well, I guess you can say the music video fits too - A little girl (mankind) playing around finds a beautiful flower and in her greed rips it of its beauty and regrets it later etc etc.
By the way, "man" "he" all of them mean mankind as a whole - the human civilization.
Thanks, Jay.
